Projects of ELPIDA Foundation – 34 Years of Contribution to Children with Cancer and Leukemia

The ELPIDA Foundation was established in 1990 by doctors, scientists, nurses, psychologists, and some parents at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia, shortly after the launch of the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Clinic. From its inception, it was officially recognized by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus as a charitable foundation.

From the start, the Foundation set forth its vision and fundamental values, which are as follows:

  1. Every child with cancer or leukemia deserves, is entitled to, and should receive the best possible medical treatment and psychosocial care, regardless of financial or social status, country of origin, or nationality.

  2. The loss of life due to cancer or leukemia in children can be minimized through early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, including all modern methods, the best medications, and the most suitable therapies, backed by evidence to enhance survival or cure.

This year, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of ELPIDA Foundation for children with cancer and leukemia (1990-2024). We are proud to have significantly contributed to the monumental effort that began in Cyprus in 1990 with the establishment of the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Clinic. We have contributed in every possible way, consistently, intensively, and over the long term, complementing the efforts of the state—not as a pressure group—making possible what we have achieved as a society: a survival rate of 82% for children with cancer or leukemia.

Over the past 34 years, ELPIDA Foundation’s work has covered all areas necessary for the improvement of care and support for our children. Here are just some of the contributions:

  • Construction and Operation of ELPIDA Foundation Hostel: Built next to the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, this unique project provides free accommodation for families during the lengthy treatments of their children. The hostel includes spacious family rooms, dining facilities, play areas, a garden, and provides social worker services funded by ELPIDA.

  • Training for Doctors, Nurses, and Scientists: The Foundation has supported the training of medical and healthcare professionals dedicated to combating childhood cancer, facilitating advanced training abroad, and participation in conferences and educational activities.

  • Organization of Conferences and Lectures: ELPIDA has hosted international and educational conferences in Cyprus for health professionals, parents, and the broader public.

  • Purchase of Equipment for the Pediatric Oncology Clinic: Consistent dedication to equipping the clinic with state-of-the-art technology has greatly contributed to achieving the 82% survival rate for children with cancer or leukemia.

  • Establishment and Equipment of Bone Marrow Transplant Laboratories: The first bone marrow transplant in Cyprus was successfully conducted in 1996 at the Pediatric Oncology Clinic, thanks to ELPIDA's funding of the necessary facilities and equipment.

  • Psychosocial Support for Children and Parents: The Foundation provides psychological support for children with cancer and their families, as well as a dedicated social worker. It also offers ongoing psychological support programs for children, adolescents, and young adults who have survived cancer and now face life’s challenges.

  • Therapeutic Recreation Program at Barretstown, Ireland: Every year, ELPIDA sends 10-15 children to Barretstown, founded by actor Paul Newman, for therapeutic recreation to strengthen their psychological well-being, confidence, and self-esteem.

  • Financial Support for Families: The Foundation provides financial assistance to families in need and has advocated for the government to recognize the unique needs of children with cancer, ensuring a monthly allowance for the duration of their treatment.

We believe there is much more to be achieved in the fight against childhood cancer. We have won battles, but there is still much work to be done. Our goal is that in the near future, every child emerges victorious from this difficult trial, and cancer will never again be allowed to take a child’s life.
